The Mashup
The Mashup came about around 6 months into my journey as an artist, in March 2017. I remember being called to audition for a movie at a creative center back in Greensboro NC. When I got there, it was almost like a lightbulb went off. I scoped the place out, got some information and made some stuff happen. Next thing I know I have the place reserved and I am calling around for a caterer. The reason was totally different. At the time, the community of artist that I saw in Greensboro didn’t have a local show specifically for arts. The city was dedicated to sports and music. I wanted to venture in this lane but there wasn’t much going on, and if there were it was somewhere I just wasn’t qualified for yet. So, when I saw the place, that was the lightbulb, create an event for not only myself but other artist to be highlighted for our work!
Since orchestrating The Mashup, we have put on two successful silent auction showcases. Each event allowed at least 10 other artists to showcase their work to the community of Greensboro and neighboring cities. We offered the guests a chance to view local artists while enjoying fresh hors devours and wine. They could also enter a raffle while silently bidding on the artwork. At both events, several artists not only sold their work some made pivotal connections, while others went on to form their own events similar to that of The Mashup.
From the artist’s sales, we were able to donate a portion of the proceeds to local charities. We chose to go with two charities that specializes in assisting individuals with special needs. The Mosaic a Lifespan Studio, houses artists with special needs and allows them to create freely. We chose them as our first recipient to continue the support in pushing the arts no matter the creator. The Arc of Greensboro assists individuals with special needs with everyday life activities. They work to promote their human rights and support their inclusion in local communities. We chose them as our second recipient due to their amazing work in the community, they really have a massive organization doing great things.
So far, The Mashup has proven to be a positive event for artists and the community. We appreciate the stability and seek to grow the event in the future. The hope is that one day The Mashup will be recognized as a reputable organization known for its silent auction showcases. We have upcoming plans in the works for The Mashup so be on the lookout for those announcements.
